Grzegorz Baran is and awarded racing driver, co-driver and constructor of racing cars, but above all, a great fan of Dakar. During Inter Cars Motor Show he will be presenting his MAN TGA 18.480 4x4 truck, the same in which he drives hundreds of miles during the most difficult race in the world!
His adventure with Dakar Rally had no easy beginnings.
Grzegorz Baran: My fascination with Dakar began in 1980, when it was still a dream beond my financial possibilities. When Martyna Wojciechowska took part in the race, my will to start in it came back and I decided to gain founds myself. I started looking for money and prepating the car. Initially it was supposed to be a passenger car - Mercedes ML But my colleagues talked me into becoming a co-driver of Bernard Malferiol, with whom we drove a truck - Mercedes Unimog. It was the year 2004 and we finished on the 28th place. After this adventure I learnt that a passenger car is a good thing, but that driving a truck gives more fun and much more emotions.
Trucks from Dakar Rally are really racing cars?
G.B: That's true. Truck starting in Dakar Rally are vahicles which are prepared especially for this event. Mann which I am using has been participating the race already 5 times. This car was basically produced for the rally, although it is in the group of so called mass-produced cars. It has a purpose made transmission, suspension and a frame. One of its main advantages is its suspension: leaf-springs and absorbers. It also has a security cage. Mann taking part in Inter Cars Motor Show has already been at Dakar Rally 5 times.
Is the power also similar to that of a passenger car?
G.B: The engine of my Mann initially had 480Hp. Nobody knows how much it has now. Mann Motors is modifying it every year. I suppose now it has approximately 650-680Hp. This is maximum power available for a private driver.
How are such trucks ding during Dakar?
G.B: Perfectly! Rally organizers introduced speed limits for trucks. This means they can go at maximum 140km/h. Organizers claim that this is for safety reasons. The truth is that the limit was introduced, because trucks were winning with passenger cars. It was not seen well when trucks were winning with BMWs or Toyotas. There are still some special stages during which a truck always wins with passenger cars.
What do you consider to be your greatest success during the race?
G.B: When looking at the place we won, it was not bad. We got to the finish line 19th out of 100 starting trucks. Being a private driver, without any governmental support, it is a really good result. Most of the trucks taking part in Dakar have such support. Starting in such a race is a great effort, but 40% of this effort is consumed for looking for sponsors before the race. In order to take part in it I need to have minimum 150k Euro. Other teams have on average the amount of 1m Euro. For example, Russians have around EUR 30m for 5 participating trucks. Places that I win, between 20th and 30th, are a prove that I have done my work the best I could.
Despite all those difficulties you are preparing to another rally.
G.B: If I can find money, I shall take part in it. Dakar Rally is really interesting. It is the biggest, the most difficult, the most mediumistic, but also the most expensive. This is also the most often watched motor-sport event in the world, besides motorcycle races. It is estimated that if we want to reach the finish line, we have 80% chances, if we want to get a good place, we have 50% chances, but to win the rally - only 20%, I am much disappointed that during 10 rallies I had no opportunity of driving as a representative of Poland. I have been driving in German, Chinese, Ukrainian and Russian teams, but not in Polish. I never had a sign POLAND. The same goes for such drivers as Krzysztof Hołowczyc, who drives in German team, or Czachor with Dąbrowski who take part as Orlen Team.
Is Mann also taking part in other rallies and races?
G.B: This year I took part in Baja Szczecin and I was second out of 3 teams taking part in it, because only 3 teams decided to start. Unfortunately, there are not many trucks which are racing. We are observing a growing interest of spectators, as the trucks are much more spectacular. When the wheel is of a human height, you are sitting on the level of first floor, the perspective is totally different. Additionally the car is turning, jumping at the speed of 100km/h... these are real emotions!
